As part of Highlands' Garden Village, the Cottage Hill Senior Apartments helps to create diversity in both the economic and inter-generational elements of the community. Most of the Cottage Hill residents have lived in northwest Denver for many years. With many senior residents having spent their childhood in the Highlands' neighborhood, they bring a sense of place and history to the larger development.
Cottage Hill Senior Apartments, which opened in 2000, has 63 units of independent living for seniors 55 years or older. Of the 63 units, 40 percent are rented as affordable apartments to persons earning less than 60 percent of the median income. There is a mix of one- and two- bedroom and studio apartments ranging in size from 400-square-feet to 1,000-square-feet. All apartments include energy-efficient appliances, large-windows, and many recycled building materials. There is a small health club and a gracious activity room, where residents share movie nights, gather for small potluck dinners or play card games. An intimate library offers books, which have been donated by residents and local libraries, a movie video selection, a computer with Internet access and a copy machine.
